YOUR QUESTIONS ANSWERED

Fine wine ownership offers a unique and tangible way to diversify a traditional investment portfolio. As an asset Fine wine has shown low correlation with equities and broader financial markets, making it a valuable hedge against volatility and inflation. Its limited supply, global demand, and long-term appreciation potential position it as both a stable store of value and a rewarding alternative. Whether you're seeking to balance risk, protect capital, or explore a passion-led asset, fine wine can add a new dimension to portfolio.

There is no better recent example of fine wine's low market correlation than 2020, when the FTSE dropped by more than 20% during the COVID-19 market crash before partially recovering, whereas the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 Index saw an increase of around 15% that year.

The Brexit vote in 2016 caused significant volatility in the UK stock market, with the FTSE 100 falling by nearly 8% the day after the result was announced. Fine wine values remained unaffected or increased. A key driver being investors who flocked to alternative assets to hedge against uncertainty.

During the 2008 financial crisis, the Liv-ex Fine Wine 100 demonstrated a remarkable level of
stability. While global equity markets plummeted, wine values, particularly from top Bordeaux estates, performed well. Château Lafite Rothschild was still selling at prices comparable to
pre-crisis levels. Top Bordeaux wines, particularly from vintage years like 2000 and 2005,
remained highly desirable.

While both indices have experienced growth, fine wine has generally outpaced the FTSE 100,
especially in years of market volatility. The key difference being fine wine is not subject to the
same economic or political variables of the global markets but is instead driven by steady
demand and limited supply.

In 1984 the FTSE 100 launched. That same year Château Lafite Rothschild released their 1982
vintage. A £5,000 stake in the Lafite 82’ is estimated to be worth nearly £700,000 today,
compared to the FTSE 100’s £35,000.
